A New Beginning: Schools Resume for the Continuing Academic Year

As the first rays of sunlight bathed the streets of Ghana on the morning of January 5th, 2025, the buzz of excitement and anticipation filled the air. It was the start of the second academic term, and schools across the country were resuming after the holiday break. After weeks of rest, relaxation, and family time, students were now ready to dive back into their studies, filled with fresh energy and a renewed sense of purpose.

For many, the beginning of a new school term was always an exciting time. The thrill of reuniting with friends, meeting new teachers, and beginning fresh lessons made the start of the academic year feel like a new chapter in their educational journey.

A Busy Morning at School

The morning started with the familiar sounds of bus engines and the chatter of excited students as they made their way into school. Parents were dropping off their children, making sure they had everything they needed — schoolbags, books, lunch boxes, and that all-important uniform. Teachers were arriving early, preparing classrooms, checking lesson plans, and ensuring that the school grounds were ready for the day’s activities.

In one school in Accra, headmistress Mrs. Asante stood at the entrance, greeting students with a warm smile and encouraging words. It had been a challenging year for the school in many respects, but the community had rallied together to overcome obstacles, including adapting to new learning methods and dealing with economic struggles that had impacted families. Today, however, there was a renewed sense of optimism.

“This term, we have so much to look forward to,” Mrs. Asante said. “Our students have shown resilience, and we will continue to support each and every one of them in their academic journey.”

Excitement in the Classrooms

Inside the classrooms, teachers were gearing up for the new term. Mrs. Afia, a mathematics teacher, was ready with new lesson plans aimed at strengthening the students’ problem-solving skills. “This term, we will tackle even more challenging concepts, but I am confident that my students are ready,” she said with a smile as she adjusted the whiteboard in her classroom.

In another classroom, Mr. Kofi, the history teacher, was enthusiastic to teach his students about Ghana’s rich heritage and its role in the broader history of Africa. The curriculum for the term was packed with insightful lessons about the country’s past, and he was eager to spark conversations among his students about the importance of understanding their history.

For the younger students, excitement was palpable as they reunited with old friends and made new ones. “I can’t wait to learn more about science this term,” said Kofi, a Grade 5 student, his face lighting up. “Last term was so much fun, and I know this one will be even better.”
