80 farmers receive assorted agro chemicals from Assin Odumasi Youth

Assin Odumasi Restoration Child and Youth Development Center (AORCYDC) and Compassion International have jointly given assorted agro chemicals and fertilizers to 80 farmers in the Area to increase yields.

The assorted agro chemicals included insecticides, fungicides, weedicides and bags of fertilizers estimated at GH¢56,000.00.

Presenting the items to the farmers, Rev John Evans Arthur, Reverend Minister at the Abura Dunkwa Assemblies of God Church, said the synthetic chemicals were used to enhance the growth of crops and boost their yield.

He charged them to strictly abide by the laid down instructions on each of the agro chemicals before using them and those who find difficulty in comprehending should contact others.

He reminded l them that the inappropriate use of agro chemicals had dire consequences on the health of farmers, consumers and the environment.

Again, he advised the farmers that the continuous use of agro chemicals in a particular area for a long time had negative effects on the soil, water-bodies, bio-diversity, pollinators and climatic conditions.

Rev Arthur appealed to the farmers to use the agro chemicals for their intended purposes as a team of inspectors would be tasked to visit beneficiary farms to update the AORCYDC for informed decisions.

Mr Iftikhar Ahmed Fenyo, Project Director, also advised the farmers to use the agro chemicals as directed because it could seep into the soil and contaminate ground water or be carried away by run-off water into nearby water bodies.

As a result, it could cause serious harm to the aquatic ecosystem and potentially impact negatively on human lives.

He told the farmers to keep the agro chemicals at a safe place and not their various homes to avoid accident.

Mrs Joyce Owusu, a beneficiary, said the agro chemicals had arrived on time and would help her farm to yield more.
