Six die in ambush on Burkina Faso military convoy

An ambush on a Burkina Faso military convoy escorting fuel tankers from a gold mine near the border with Niger has left six officers dead, officials say. Seven people were wounded after what the regional government in eastern Burkina Faso said was an attack by suspected jihadists. Two years ago 39 people were killed when a convoy of vehicles from the same mine was targeted. That incident shut down production for almost a year. Since 2015 attacks in the country by groups linked to the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda have killed more than 1,500 people and forced more than a million people from their homes. Source: BBC

We must address teenage pregnancies with urgency

Found some really chilling statistics about teenage pregnancies across the country, while preparing for a radio programme last week. We must all support the call for the development of a policy that will help prevent and stem the rising risk of teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and their attendant social issues. And this must be urgent! We are already in torrid times, with a myriad of social problems- unemployment, insecurity, a struggling economy coupled with a pandemic, among others. Quite unfortunately our youth are getting caught up in yet another quandary. Even without considering the times, we are in, and our dire economic circumstances, without question, our children, barely babies themselves, have no business making babies. Falling educational stan...

Harvey Elliott: Liverpool midfielder to have surgery on ankle injury in London on Tuesday

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott will have surgery on his injured ankle on Tuesday, says boss Jurgen Klopp. Elliott, 18, was carried off on a stretcher during Sunday's 3-0 win at Leeds after a challenge by defender Pascal Struijk, who was sent off. "He is in London and will have surgery today," Klopp said. "We all wait for news from that. I spoke to him the night after the game and he was in the best possible place at the moment." Elliott's team-mates were clearly upset by the seriousness of the injury at the time and say they will now rally around the youngster as he recovers. "What happened with Harvey made me sad. It's difficult to deal with that when you're on the pitch," said Reds' goalkeeper Alisson. "All the players have a big role to support him,...

AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss Wednesday's opening Champions League group match at Liverpool with an Achilles tendon problem. Ibrahimovic, who turns 40 in October, made a goalscoring return from injury in Sunday's Serie A win over Lazio. "After the match he had some inflammation," said the Italian team's coach Stefano Pioli. "We hoped he could play but he still had pain so we don't want to risk [playing him]." Seven-time European champions Milan are making their first appearance in the Champions League since 2014 and head to Anfield with a 100% record in the Italian top flight after winning their first three fixtures this season. Prior to the news that the Sweden forward would not be travelling to Merseyside, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had p...
