Alekna breaks discus world record with 74.35m in Oklahoma

© Getty Images Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna broke the longest standing men's world record, throwing an incredible 74.35m* to smash the discus mark at the Oklahoma Throws Series meeting in Ramona on Sunday (14). That throw improves the world record of 74.08m set by Jurgen Schult in 1986 – 16 years before Alekna was born – and it formed part of a series of six 70m-plus throws by the 21-year-old. Competing on a weekend when discus throwers were blessed with perfect conditions, Alekna showed he meant business from the start, opening with 72.21m. That improved on the 71.39m PB that had moved him up to No.10 on the world all-time list on 6 April, but still he looked frustrated. The two-time world medallist followed that with 70.32m in the gusty conditions, but seemed much happier ...

World record by Charlton, plus Bol and Doom at the double on final session in Glasgow

© Getty Images Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas produced the second world record of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 as she lowered her 60m hurdles mark to 7.65 in securing her first global title. There might have been a third world record as Mondo Duplantis, having successfully defended his pole vault title despite a few wobbles with a clearance of 6.05m, had two out of three decent attempts at increasing his world record to 6.24m. Femke Bol followed her world 400m record of the night before by anchoring the Netherlands to gold in the women’s 4x400m. Alexander Doom, the other individual 400m champion, completed the same double by anchoring Belgium to gold in the men’s 4x400m, stealing the spotlight from world 100m and 200m champion Noah Lyles, ...

Ngetich smashes world 10km record with 28:46 in Valencia

(© Sportmedia.es)   Kenya's Agnes Ngetich obliterated the women's world 10km record by running 28:46* at the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, a World Athletics Label road race, on Sunday (14). The 22-year-old becomes the first woman to break 29 minutes for the distance, improving by 28 seconds the previous road mixed race world record set by Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw in Castellon two years ago. World cross country bronze medallist Ngetich was paced in the Spanish coastal city by her compatriot Japheth Kipkemboi Kosgei and the first world record fell at half way as Ngetich went through the 5km checkpoint in 14:13. That is six seconds faster than the women’s world record achieved in a mixed race, set by Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye in Barcelona in 2021, and matches the time K...

Ratified: USA’s world mixed 4x400m record

Their record-breaking performance provided a dramatic climax of the opening night of action at this year’s World Championships. First-leg runner Justin Robinson gave the USA an early lead, but the Netherlands were close behind. Lieke Klaver put the Netherlands into pole position at half way with a marginal lead over Rosey Effiong of the USA. Isaya Klein Ikkink maintained Netherlands’ lead on the third leg, but USA’s Matthew Boling had closed the gap. Hurdles specialist Femke Bol took up the running ...

Kipyegon set three world records on the track this year, the first two coming within a week of each other as she clocked 3:49.11 for 1500m in Florence, then 14:05.20 for 5000m in Paris. Several weeks later, she lined up for the mile at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Monaco with one goal in mind. On a hot and humid evening, Kipyegon did not allow anything to distract her from her task. She locked in immediately to the world record pace being marked by flashing lights ...

A day of firsts, falls, and a world record flourish

© Getty Images The first day of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 had it all. It started with the greatest depth men's 20km race walk in championship history, won by Spain's Alvaro Martin, and ended in dramatic style when USA won the mixed 4x400m in a world record of 3:08.80. In between those, Ryan Crouser successfully defended his shot put title with a championship record of 23.51m, and Gudaf Tsegay led an Ethiopian sweep of the medals in the women's 10,000m. But falls from two prominent Dutch athletes – first by Sifan Hassan in the 10,000m and then by Femke Bol in the mixed 4x400m – provided two of the biggest talking points of the evening.Day one event reports• Men's 20km race walk• Women's 10,000m• Men's shot put• Mixed 4x400m ...

Kipyegon eyes world double after record mile in Monaco

(© AFP / Getty Images)Was it ever in doubt? Faith Kipyegon continued to plunder the most revered middle distance marks in the sport, setting her third world record in 50 days on Friday (21), at the Herculis meeting in Monaco. The Olympic and world champion has marched across Europe in the last seven weeks like a latter-day Caesar. She started this imperious run of Wanda Diamond League form in Florence on 2 June, when she became the first woman to run 1500m in under 3:50. She then conquered Paris a week later, this time splintering the 5000m record, before laying siege to the mile in Monaco. On a hot and humid evening, Kipyegon did not allow anything to distract her from the prize. She locked in immediately to the world record pace being marked by flashing lights ins...

Kipyegon celebrates world record run, but insists: “there’s still more to come”

Heading into the Golden Gala meeting in Florence, Faith Kipyegon said the world 1500m record was in her heart and on her mind. By the end of the race on Friday (2), it was also in her legs and on the clock – which she stopped in an astonishing 3:49.11*. The world and Olympic champion delivered a thrilling finale to the third leg of the Wanda Diamond League with a bravura performance in a city that last saw a world record in 1981, when World Athletics President Sebastian Coe broke the 800m mark. The pacemakers had been asked to take the field through in 3:54 pace, which seemed ambitious on a damp track after early rain. But that pace merely left Kipyegon full of running when she took the lead in the penultimate lap, as she blazed through the final 600m at unprecedented speed. Her ...

New technique, same record-breaking brilliance by Crouser

(© Mercedes Oliver) Ryan Crouser might have added 19cm to his own world shot put record by throwing 23.56m* at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, this season’s sixth World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, on Saturday (27), but even more exciting is that he feels he has more left in him.“It still felt like an early-season meet. I'm really excited because it didn't feel polished,” the world and Olympic champion explained. “It felt like I had a tonne of power and I caught a big one, but there's still a lot more there.” Crouser has been working on a new technique, which involves a larger step across the ring rather than a more static stance. He said that he used the step in rounds two through to six, and the technique really “clicked” for him.“I finally saw that spread I've been loo...

Crouser breaks world shot put record with 23.56m in Los Angeles

USA’s Ryan Crouser threw 23.56m* to improve his own world shot put record at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, this season’s sixth World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, on Saturday (27). That mark adds 19cm to the previous world record of 23.37m that Crouser recorded at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene in June 2021. The world record had looked under threat when the world and Olympic champion opened his series with 23.23m. He went even farther in round two, throwing 23.31m and edging closer to the barrier at the back of the throws area. After a third-round throw of 22.94m, Crouser took to the circle for his fourth attempt and launched the implement at 23.56m, raising his arms and clapping when the distance was confirmed. He completed a sensational series with 22.80m in ...
