Today in History: Kotoko beat TP Englebert to win Ghana’s first African club championship

On 24th January 1971 which is exactly 50 years ago at the gigantic Tata Raphael stadium, in front of the head of state of Zaire, Mobuto Seseko, Asante Kotoko defeated TP Englebert to lift Ghana's first Africa's Clubs Championship now (CAF Champions league). The Reds beat the Congolese side by 2-1 at their own backyard, after playing a 1-1 stalemate in the first leg in Kumasi. Abukari put Kotoko ahead in the 12th minute before left winger Tshinabu levelled for TP Englebert 7 minutes later. Malik Jabir restored Asante Kotoko’s lead in the 80th minute, but just after Kotoko had finished celebrating their goal then the referee gave a penalty to the home which was wasted by goal scorer Tshinabu.
