Thousands in China contract disease after leak at biopharmaceutical company

More than 3000 people have contracted a bacterial disease after a leak at a biopharmaceutical company in the Chinese city of Lanzhou last year. Between July and August last year, the Zhongmu Lanzhou biological pharmaceutical company was developing vaccines for animals for the bacteria Brucella, which can cause the infectious disease Brucellosis when humans come into contact with it. However, the company used expired disinfectants and sanitisers meaning not all of the bacteria was eradicated from waste gas. This gas - which had bacteria caught up in it - then drifted downwind to a local veterinary research institute.   © Getty. The illness can have lasting effects. Now, more than a year later, the local health commission has confirmed that 21,847 people were test...

Fire destroys wares worth thousands of cedis at Tarkwa

Fire has destroyed three stores around the Tarkwa Railway Station, destroying goods and properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis. The affected structures included a mobile phone shop, saloon, and a boutique. The blaze was alleged to have started in the early hours on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, from the boutique and spread to the others. Although the cause of the fire is yet to be established, some eyewitnesses attributed the fire outbreak to an electrical fault in the area where the fire started. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Divisional Officer Grade III, Mr Alex Assiem, the Acting Municipal Officer of Ghana National Fire Service, Tarkwa, said his officers had a hard time putting off the fire as they had to struggle through the crowd to bring the situa...

Toll expected to rise in blast that shook Beirut, killing 100, injuring thousands

Lebanese rescue workers dug through rubble looking for survivors of a powerful warehouse explosion that shook the capital Beirut, killing 100 people and injuring nearly 4,000 in a toll that officials expected to rise. Tuesday's blast at port warehouses storing highly explosive material was the most powerful in years in Beirut, already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections. President Michel Aoun said that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures, and he said that was "unacceptable". He called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Officials did not say what caused the blaze that set off the blast. A security source and media said it was started by we...

Thousands protest in Mali anti-government rally

Tens of thousands of people rallied in Mali's capital Bamako on Friday to demand the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, heeding the call of the country's newly resurgent opposition. The 75-year-old president is under pressure over failures to contain a jihadist insurgency that emerged in northern Mali in 2012 and spread to the fragile centre of the West African state. Thousands of soldiers and civilians have died, and hundreds of thousands have fled their homes. But the sclerotic pace of political reforms, a flagging economy and a widely shared perception of government corruption have also fed anti-Keita sentiment.  On Friday, an imam led tens of thousands of protesters in a prayer in a central city square.  Protesters then sang the national ant...

Thousands of African migrants stranded in transit due to spread of COVID 19

Thousands of African migrants are stuck in transit - unable to reach their destination or to get back home because the coronavirus pandemic has caused the world to come to a standstill. Take two key exit points: the Horn of Africa route via the Gulf of Aden into the Middle East and the central Mediterranean route from Libya to Europe. On the Horn of Africa route, the UN agency, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has recorded a sharp fall in the numbers of migrant crossings. In April just 1,725 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn, compared to 7,223 in March, 9,624 in February and 11,101 in January of this year. Last year more than 138,000 people - an average of around 11,500 a month - crossed on boats to Yemen, the majority Ethiopians bound for Saudi Arabia...
