Tanzanite: Tanzanian miner earns millions after second rare find

Image captionMr Laizer in June at an auction where he sold two Tanzanite rocks for $3.4m A Tanzanian small-scale miner, who became an overnight millionaire in June for selling two rough Tanzanite stones valued at $3.4m (£2.6m), has sold another gem for $2m. The third discovery by Saniniu Laizer weighed 6.3kg (14lb). Tanzanite is only found in northern Tanzania and is used to make ornaments. It is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, and one local geologist estimates its supply may be entirely depleted within the next 20 years. The precious stone's appeal lies in its variety of hues, including green, red, purple and blue. Its value is determined by rarity - the finer the colour or clarity, the higher the price. Mr Lazier urged his fellow small-scale miners to work wit...

Majority Leader: EC to save Ghana millions in 2020 elections

From the building of a new data centre through the acquisition of enhanced voting equipment and materials, to the conduct of the December 2020 General Election, Ghana’s Electoral Commission would save the nation millions of cash in its activities. Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, made the assessment, on Wednesday, and wondered why the Minority Caucus was raising issues with the EC on its roadmap and preparations towards the conduct of the elections. At a press conference at the Parliament House, in Accra on Wednesday, the Majority announced the timetable released by the EC in its activities in the run-up to the  elections, and held the Minority Caucus to task for castigating the EC despite its attempt to beat down the cost of activi...

Vanessa Bryant seeking ‘hundreds of millions’ in damages after Kobe Bryant death

Vanessa Bryant is seeking "hundreds of millions of dollars" in damages following her husband Kobe Bryant's death.  The 38-year-old beauty was left heartbroken in January when the NBA legend and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna both lost their lives in a helicopter crash which killed seven others, and she is now seeking damages from the helicopter company and the pilot's estate to help cover the cost of losing her loved ones. Vanessa Bryant filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Island Express in February this year, and has now said both the company, and the estate of the pilot Ara George Zobayan - who also lost his life in the crash - owe her in damages. Documents obtained by The Blast read: "As a result of Kobe Bryant's and GB's deaths, Vanessa Bryant seeks economic damage...

Wuhan Tests Millions in 12 Days as China Fears Second Virus Wave

Wuhan, the epicenter of China’s coronavirus outbreak, said it tested nearly seven million people in 12 days, concluding a campaign to test the entire population after several infections prompted fears of a second wave. A total of 6.68 million people underwent nucleic acid tests, of which 206 asymptomatic cases were reported, according to Bloomberg calculations based on daily numbers released by the local health commission. Wuhan’s mass testing campaign is part of China’s efforts to prevent the resurgence of the epidemic at all costs after it shut down large swathes of the world’s second-largest economy to get it under control. The emergence of a new cluster of cases in its northeast region led officials to lock down some 100 million residents. The ambitious testing miss...

Millions evacuated ahead of super cyclone

India and Bangladesh are evacuating millions of people from coastal areas ahead of a super cyclone which is approaching from the Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Amphan is expected to make landfall in an area near the border of the two countries later on Wednesday. More than 20 relief teams have already been deployed, and several more are on standby, Indian officials say. The coronavirus outbreak is making it harder for officials in both countries to evacuate people in these regions.Amphan is expected to hit the coast with winds gusting up to 185km/h (115mph), forecasters say. Officials in Bangladesh fear it will be the most powerful storm since Cyclone Sidr killed about 3,500 people in 2007. Most died as a result of sea water surging in. While the storm's current wind speed is likel...
