Italy shipwreck: At least 58 migrants killed off Calabria coast

At least 58 migrants, including a baby, have died and dozens more have survived after their roverloaded boat sank in rough seas off southern Italy. The vessel reportedly broke apart while trying to land with about 150 people aboard near the coastal town of Crotone in the Calabria region. Many bodies have been recovered from the beach at a nearby seaside resort. Large numbers of people fleeing conflict and poverty make the crossing from Africa to Italy each year. Over 70 migrants jump from rescue ship and try to swim to Italian coast

More than 70 migrants jumped overboard on a rescue ship while awaiting for permission to dock in southern Italy, according to a charity. Open Arms, a Spanish charity, said the migrants jumped into the sea out of frustration after learning that permission to enter Malta had been refused. They were rescued on Wednesday by Italian authorities off the coast of Palermo, southern Sicily. The search-and-rescue ship picked up three separate groups during attempts to cross the Mediterranean in small boats last week, and had around 280 migrants and refugees on board. At least 45 migrants dead in shipwreck off Libya

At least 45 migrants and refugees have died off the coast of Libya after the engine of vessel they were travelling on exploded, the UN has reported with five children said to be among the deceased. The incident in the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Zwara, which occurred on Monday, is the deadliest recorded shipwreck of the year so far according to the agency. Some 37 people, predominantly from Senegal, Mali, Chad and Ghana, are reported to have survived after being rescued by local fisherman and have since been detained. More Burkinabe migrants flout border closure directive

The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted 13 Burkina Faso migrants at the Babile Inland Checkpoint in the Lawra Municipality for flouting the border closure directive. That was after the GIS arrested 13 Burkinabes on June 1, 2020, for sneaking into Ghana through unapproved routes at Hamile and one other at Tumu on June 6, 2020, for illegally entering into Ghana.
