Tenants appeal for protection from exploitative agents and landlords

Some tenants within the Greater Accra region are appealing to authorities to amend and implement existing laws on tenancy to protect citizens from exploitation. According to them, it was important for the government to regulate the real estate leasing industry that currently exposed tenants to exorbitant rent rates from landlords and illegal and unwarranted charges and commission including airtime charges from agents. Court orders landlords to construct a household toilet  

A Hohoe Magistrate Court has ordered Francis Ahiaho and Samuel Tenkpor, both household heads, to construct a toilet before February 27, 2023.  They were brought before the Court for refusal to construct a household latrine and depositing feces in polythene bags behind their living room and bathhouse.   Ahiaho pleaded guilty while Tenkpor pleaded guilty with an explanation but could not be exonerated of the charge.   The Court granted them a bail of GH¢1,000 with two sureties each and they will re-appear in Court on February 27 for sentencing.  Prosecuting, Mr. Frank Azila-Gbettor told the Court presided over by Madam Edith Lucy Dzormeku that the accused people were household heads who inherited the house from their late father.   He said on February 2, last year, a tea...

Court orders landlords to relocate properties on waterways  

A district circuit court at Tuobodom in the Techiman North District of the Bono East Region has given a two-month ultimatum to 11 landlords to relocate their properties built on waterways in the Techiman Municipality.   Almost all the landlords had their properties situated at Twimia, a suburb of Techiman.   Mr Eric Asiedu, the Techiman Municipal Director of, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said the directive by the court, presided by Justice Frimpong Manso, followed a suit filed by NADMO, seeking an order for the demolishing of the properties on the waterways.   Mr Asiedu, in an interview with newsmen in Techiman, the Bono East regional capital, said: “The suit was not a deliberate attempt to destroy anybody’s property, but to help prevent perennial floodi...

Cannabis farms leave landlords high and dry

Landlords have been hit with bills worth thousands after rogue tenants set up cannabis farms in attics and basements of rental properties. Renters have abused lockdowns and subsequent hands-off approach from landlords to cultivate the illegal drug, according to insurance claims. There has been a 60pc increase in the number of cannabis-related claims between January and September this year compared with 2020, according to Hamilton Fraser Total Landlord Insurance. Steve Barnes, of the company, said: "This was a big problem about 10 years ago and it seems to be rearing its ugly head again.
