The Ministry of Education has extended its deepest condolences to the families of seven students from Lawra Senior High School who tragically lost their lives in a canoe accident on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
The incident occurred when ten members of the school’s cadet corps, reportedly engaged in a routine morning jogging exercise, attempted to cross the Black Volta River near Dikpe into neighboring Burkina Faso. Their canoe capsized mid-river, resulting in the deaths of seven students—five girls and two boys. Three students were rescued.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry conveyed the sorrow of the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and the government. “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this heartbreaking event,” the statement read.

Rescue operations led by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) led to the retrieval of all seven bodies.
In response to the tragedy, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Director General of GES to immediately convene a high-level meeting with the Regional and District Directors of Education as well as the Headmaster of Lawra SHS. The purpose of the meeting is to gather preliminary facts and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to student safety and assured the public that it awaits a full investigation report from the Ghana Police Service.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected families and the entire Lawra SHS community during this painful time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the statement concluded.
