EC Assures Integrity of 2024 Election Despite BVD Theft

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the public that the integrity of the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections will not be compromised despite the theft of several Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

Five officials of the Electoral Commission have been interdicted following the alleged theft of the BVDs. The EC has confirmed that the suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the director of electoral services at the Electoral Commission, emphasized that the theft of the BVDs would not affect the integrity of the electoral process. He pointed out that similar incidents have occurred in the past, with individuals being prosecuted and jailed, yet the integrity of the EC’s activities remained intact.

“This is not the first time that an item is missing from the Electoral Commission. People have been prosecuted and jailed but it didn’t compromise the integrity of our activities,” Dr. Quaicoe stated on the Asaase Breakfast Show.

He further emphasized, “So no matter what happens, the integrity of our system remains intact. Nobody can use a stolen material to interfere in the electoral processes.”

The EC’s swift action in interdicting the officials and collaborating with the police for further investigation underscores its commitment to ensuring the credibility and transparency of the electoral process in Ghana.
