Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to begin the controlled spilling of excess water from the Weija Dam due to a steady rise in water levels following recent rainfall.
In an official communication addressed to the Managing Director of GWL and copied to relevant management personnel, the Regional Chief Manager, Mr. Charles K. Tulashie, emphasized the need to protect the structural integrity of the dam and safeguard lives and properties in downstream communities.
According to Mr. Tulashie, the Weija Dam has been experiencing a gradual increase in water level, which if left unchecked, could pose a significant risk. “Failure to commence immediate controlled spilling may result in compromising of the structural integrity of the dam,” he warned.
The statement indicated that although the spillage will begin at a very low rate to minimize potential effects on downstream communities, the actual volume of discharge will be determined by the rate of inflow into the dam.
“The spillage would continue as long as the level of water in the dam keeps rising. This is to safeguard the dam from any possible collapse,” Mr. Tulashie noted.
Ghana Water Limited has expressed regret for any inconvenience the operation may cause and reassured the public that the decision is a necessary safety measure.
Residents living downstream are advised to stay informed and take precautionary measures as the situation develops.
