Away goals rule scrapped in Uefa competitions including Champions League

The away goals rule in European club football is to be abolished from the start of next season, governing body Uefa has confirmed. The rule, used since 1965, decided drawn two-legged games by favouring the team that scored the most away goals. All ties level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will instead go to extra time and potentially penalties. "It is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight," said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin. Uefa's club competitions committee made the proposal in May and it has now been approved by the body's executive committee. It means games in the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League and Women's Champions League will no longer use the rule. Uefa says there is now a smaller gap between the...

Mahama’s aide chides Godfred Dame over $170m judgement debt

Aide to former President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has rebuked the Attorney-General’s handling of the GPGC case that has resulted in the award of $170 million judgement debt against the state. According to the private legal practitioner, Godfred Dame failed his office when he did not give the case the needed attention at the London court. “To lose a case of this magnitude due to tardiness and sloppiness is unconscionable. How could government ignore a recommendation to pay $18million and rather end up forcing the Ghanaian taxpayer without consideration for their suffering, to now pay almost 10 times the amount, $170million, just because some people did not do their job well?” she said in a Facebook post. The Ghana Power Generation Company (GPGC) dragged the Government...

The former Fifa Council member was adjudged to have received benefits from Lagardere during negotiations between the French media company and Caf - which resulted in "significant financial damage" to the latter. Caf's one-time vice-president is said to have received just over 66,000 Euros (US$80,000), which football's world governing body has instructed he pay as a fine as part of his sanction. Constant Omari, who recently left his role as DR Congo's football federation president after a 16-year reign, entered into a plea bargain arrangement with Fifa.
