Fourteen people lost their lives and 35 others sustained several degrees of injures after a Burkina Faso bound DAF Cargo Truck horrifically crashed into two buses on the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Eastern region.
The accident was said to have occurred at on Tuesday at about 5:30 am Kyekyewere community near Nsawam to Suhum stretch of the Highway.
The body of the deceased have been conveyed to the morgue of the Suhum Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation.
The injured have also been taken to the Suhum and Nsawam Government Hospitals for treatment.
Confirming the incident to the Ghana News Express, the District Police Commander of Suhum-Kroabo-Coaltar, ASP Francis Nertey said the fully loaded DAF Cargo Truck was from Accra heading towards Kumasi when the truck burst a tyre.
He said in the process, the truck with registration number 11 JL 6112 BF veered off its single lane and crashed into two buses fully loaded with passengers from Kumasi heading towards Accra.
The two buses included an STC bus with registration number GE 8131-16 and another KIA bus with registration number GT 4997-20.
He said the two of the deceased were from the STC bus whilst 12 others were from the KIA bus.
He said personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ambulance and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) were at the scene to rescue the victims.
