Bridge repair paralyses Lagos traffic

Monster traffic jams are nothing new for Lagos, but the partial closure of the city's main bridge for repairs has made getting about an even greater ordeal for its 20 million inhabitants. The on-ramp to the Third Mainland Bridge has become the most coveted piece of real estate in Africa's biggest city -- at rush hour, it turns into a chokepoint that saps energy, frays nerves and drives up costs. Cyril Oyenuga is clearly exhausted as he lifts a small towel wedged into the window to protect him from the sun. "Yesterday I spent five hours in traffic jams. It's very tiring," he said. "But I don't have a choice. I have to work." The Third Mainland is Africa's second-largest bridge, extending nearly 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) to link Lagos Island, the business heart of the city,...

Virgin Atlantic files for bankruptcy protection in New York

Sir Richard Branson’s flagship business, Virgin Atlantic, has filed for bankruptcy protection in New York after telling a court in London it would run out of cash in September if a planned rescue deal failed. The airline has suffered more than any other UK carrier as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Virgin Atlantic has a solely long-haul network, focused on transatlantic flights. Since mid-March, President Trump has barred all British and EU visitors from the US. Inbound to the UK, all passengers must undergo two weeks of mandatory quarantine. Virgin Atlantic has negligible revenue and instead has been handing back hundreds of millions of pounds in refunds – though far slower than the law demands. It has announced the closure of its Gatwick base to cut costs, an...

Ex-Google exec sent to prison for stealing robocar secrets

A former Google engineer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing trade secrets before joining Uber's effort to build robotic vehicles for its ride-hailing service. The sentence handed down Tuesday by U.S. District Judge William Alsup came more than four months after former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski reached a plea agreement with the federal prosecutors who brought a criminal case against him last August. Levandowski, who helped steer Google's self-driving car project before landing at Uber, was also ordered to pay more than $850,000. Alsup had taken the unusual step of recommending the Justice Department open a criminal investigation into Levandowski while presiding over a high-profile civil trial between Uber and Waymo, a spinoff...

Toll expected to rise in blast that shook Beirut, killing 100, injuring thousands

Lebanese rescue workers dug through rubble looking for survivors of a powerful warehouse explosion that shook the capital Beirut, killing 100 people and injuring nearly 4,000 in a toll that officials expected to rise. Tuesday's blast at port warehouses storing highly explosive material was the most powerful in years in Beirut, already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections. President Michel Aoun said that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures, and he said that was "unacceptable". He called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Officials did not say what caused the blaze that set off the blast. A security source and media said it was started by we...

Ferran Torres: Man City sign Valencia winger

Manchester City have completed the signing of Valencia winger Ferran Torres for 23m euros (£20.87m). He is City's first summer signing and replaces Germany forward Leroy Sane, who left on 3 July for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract. "Every player wants to be involved in attacking teams and Manchester City are one of the most attacking in world football," Torres said. "I am so happy to be joining City." City's director of football Txiki Begiristain added: "We have followed Ferran's progress closely and have been very impressed. "He is young and still developing, but his technical qualities are exactly what we are looking for in a winger. He is quick, direct, can create space with one movement and is capable of p...

Fulham beat Brentford to reach Premier League

Fulham beat Brentford in the Championship play-off final to secure an immediate return to the Premier League thanks to two extra-time goals from Joe Bryan. The left-back caught Bees goalkeeper David Raya off guard with a free-kick from 40 yards in the 105th minute of the game at Wembley, with the Spaniard expecting a cross and then unable to scamper back and save Bryan's skidding low effort. With the Bees pouring forward in search of an equaliser, Bryan burst forward and combined with Aleksandar Mitrovic before stabbing past Raya to make the game safe with three minutes remaining. Henrik Dalsgaard pulled a goal back with a header from eight yards out in the fourth minute of added time, but it was too late for the Bees to spark a comeback. The goals from Bryan were two rare mom...

Over 770,000 workers experience reduction in wages – Survey

A Business Tracker Survey conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) indicates that more than 770,000 workers (25.7 percent of the total workforce) have their wages reduced and about 42,000 employees laid off during the country’s COVID-19 partial lockdown. The survey conducted by GSS in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank stated that the pandemic also led to a reduction in working hours for close to 700,000 workers. The survey report revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had caused considerable impacts on Ghanaian businesses, forcing many firms to cut costs by reducing staff hours, cutting wages, and in some cases laying off workers. “The data also show that during the lockdown, about 244,000 firms started adjusting their business mo...
