Police arrests four chiefs….after providing them with security to commit offence

After providing heaving security for the installation of a new Okuapemhene at Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region yesterday, the Police has turned around to arrest four sub-chiefs who led the installation process for flouting social distancing protocols.

According to media reports, the four chiefs were picked by the police hours after the installation process for breaking the law.

The decision by the police to provide security for the installation process which, clearly, contravenes the Imposition of Restriction Act 2020 (Act 1020), and later arresting the chiefs involved in the process, has angered many people.

Scores of people on social media are calling for similar punishment for the state security personnel for condoning the illegality by providing security at the installation ceremony.”We’ve all seen the videos of the Okuapeman installation.

Didn’t we see heavy armed policemen in face masks providing protection to the large crowd? Who deployed the first batch of police? Who also sent the second batch to the arrest of the four after the event? the arrest is an insult to our intelligence” an angry Facebook user posted in reaction to the conduct of the police.

The government has placed a ban on public gatherings including church activities, festivals, funerals, among others, as part of measures to contain the spread for the Coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic in the country.

Already, some pastors, church members, Okada riders, commercial drivers, etc, are facing trial for flouting the law.Meanwhile, on Friday morning, Kingmakers of Akuapem initiated traditional process to install a new Okuapemhene, amidst heavy security.
