Tension is mounting at Akuapem Akropong in the Eastern Region following the installation of Odehye Nana Kesse as the new Okuapemhene. The ceremony is taking place under heavy security.
The new chief is being installed after the Judicial Review Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs nullified the enstoolment of Odehye Kwasi Akufo as the Okuapemhene yesterday.
The Judicial Review Committee, in its ruling, said it was against the laid down tradition for the Queenmother of the area, Nana Afua Nketiaa Obuo II, to select Odehye Kwasi Akufo to the vacant position.
According to the committee, the Abrewatia of the Royal Sakyiama Family is the legitimate person to select candidates to be installed as Paramount Chief.
The Okuapeman stool has remained vacant since the demise of Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III, the Okuapemhene about five years ago. This is due to a dispute from the Sakyibea Royal Family, which is next in line to nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy.
Different factions have emerged from the Sakyibea Royal Family, each claiming to be the right candidate to succeed the late Oseadeyo Addo Dankwa III.
The petition was filed by Abrewatia Lily Agyeman against the Queenmother and three others.
The three-member committee, Chaired by the Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sackitey, said persuant to the tradition, it is the older woman of the family (Abrewatia) who had the legitimate right to nominate and present the nominee for the installation process to begin.
The committee awarded a cost of GH¢25,000 against the respondents.29
